Former Oroville Mayor Steven Jernigan Endorses Jamie Johansson for State Assembly

OROVILLE, CA —(March, 31, 2026) - Former Oroville Mayor Steven Jernigan announced his endorsement of Jamie Johansson for California State Assembly District 3, highlighting their shared record of leadership and accomplishments during their time serving on the Oroville City Council.
Jernigan, who was elected by the voters of Oroville to serve three terms as mayor, said the progress made during that time was the result of leadership and a council focused on moving the community forward.
“Jamie understands our communities, he understands how government works, and he understands how to bring people together to deliver results,” Jernigan said. “That’s why I’m proud to support him for State Assembly.”
Johansson first joined the Oroville City Council in 2006 after being appointed to fill a vacancy and was later elected the following November to continue serving the community for four years. He was selected by his fellow council members to serve as Vice Mayor during a period of significant growth and opportunity.
During Jernigan and Johansson’s time in office, the City of Oroville advanced a number
of major projects that continue to benefit the community today.
These included:
- Revitalization of Montgomery Street and Oroville’s historic downtown.
- Development of a business opportunity corridor along Feather River Blvd., paving the way for major retail opportunities that continue to grow.
- Redevelopment of the historic Oroville Inn, which later became student housing
- supporting the Northwest Lineman College.
- The council also worked to strengthen public safety by bringing the Oroville Police
- Department back to full staffing, while addressing blight, improving infrastructure, and investing in parks, recreation, and youth job training programs.
Jernigan emphasized that these accomplishments were the result of collaboration and a shared vision for Oroville’s future. “During my time as mayor, the Oroville City Council was focused on moving our community forward,” Jernigan said. “Jamie’s ability to work with others, stay focused on solutions, and help carry out the vision of the council made a difference for Oroville.”
Jernigan pointed to the city’s success in navigating complex negotiations with developers, state agencies, and community partners, as well as advancing economic development, housing, infrastructure, and public safety priorities.
“We were able to accomplish a great deal because we stayed focused on what was best for our community,” Jernigan said. “There are a lot of challenges facing our region today, and we need leaders who understand how to work with others and get things done.”
Jernigan said Johansson’s experience at both the local and statewide level makes him well-prepared to represent Assembly District 3. Following his time on the Oroville City Council, Johansson went on to serve in leadership roles with the California Farm Bureau including President/CEO, representing 30,000 farmers across the state. Johansson’s campaign for Assembly District 3 focuses on holding law makers accountable, bringing back predictability for agriculture and small businesses, improving public safety, and lowering the cost of living for rural families.
